Jamini Roy

Brief Profile: Born in 1887 in a small village in Beliatore, West Bengal, Jamini Roy joined the Government School of Art, Kolkata in 1903.  His style was a reaction against the Bengal School and Western tradition. His underlying quest was therefold: to capture the essence of simplicity embodied in the life of the folk people; to make art accessible to a wider section of people; and to give Indian art its own identity.  His works signify a primitivist idiom, done with expressive lines and a simple colour palette. He was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 1955.
Jamini Roy died on 24 April 1972 in Kolkata, where he had lived all his life.
Qualification: 1903-08 Diploma in Fine Arts, Government School of Arts and Craft, Kolkata
