Bhattacharya's gaze is powerful; he wants the viewer to look at his subjects in a certain way. There are traditional and modern boats and a boatman; this work is a realistic depiction of the life of the people depending upon the holy river Ganga. One feel a sense a speed and ephemerality which has meaning manifolded, both as a passing moment and the speed with which life evolves. Bhattacharya is known to cherish what is often regarded as mundane, and his art sheds light on aspects of life that most of us fail to take notice of.
