Manoj Dutta's painting depicts diverse characters of Bengal’s rural toys, spread over a textured surface that denotes lively movements of taal patar shepais (palm leaves soldiers) in a cinematic fashion, remarking on the Dutta's art notable for its spontaneous execution, sarcasm and childlike simplicity. The painting underpins a battle scene by the taal patar shepais, which symbolise weak in the disguise of brevity, under the control of the toy seller, a metaphorical extension of political confusion in the region. Providing a rebellious yet insightful observation on indigenous memory, socio-political chaos and the desperate state of locals, the tempera on-board procedure improves the tactile essence while boosting illustrative storytelling.
