FN Souza Indian, 1924-2002
“An intransigent individual like me, is bound to be unpopular. I don’t belong to any group and I am proud of it. The strongest man in the world is he who stands most alone, to quote An Enemy of the People.”
F N Souza
Francis Newton Souza was born in Goa in 1924. He was the founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group.
Souza's style oscillated between various eclectic sources like ancient Indian temples and bronze sculptures, Romanesque paintings, Goan rural life, European modernism, catholicism, etc. His subjects ranged from landscapes, still life, and nudes to various Christian themes exploring the realm of morality. His paintings had a bold black border that became his identity. His works are heavily textured and have a macabre feel to them.
F. N. Souza displayed his artworks worldwide and was presented with many prestigious awards.
