K.H. Ara Indian , 1913-1985

Overview

"Expression for me does not reside in the passions glowing on a human face...Composition is the art of arranging in a decorative manner the diverse elements at the painter's command to express his feelings."

- K.H. Ara

Krishnaji Howlaji Ara was born in Andhra Pradesh, from where he moved to Bombay at a very young age. He was a self-taught artist who had no formal art training.
Ara's early work of still-life paintings garnered attention, but his figurations put him in the spotlight.
He mastered watercolours, which he would manipulate to make them seem like oil paints. His palette stood earthy with pensive tones, and his work displayed rawness with dry brush strokes.
K.H. Ara was one of the founding members of the Progressive Artists' Group. He displayed his work widely and earned many awards.
