Ram Kumar Indian, 1924-2018
The winter of 1960 changed the artistic trajectory for Ram Kumar, it was in the winters of the 1960s when he travelled to the holy city of Varanasi. Then, Kumar shifted his artistic practices from figurations to complete abstractions.
His visit to Varanasi where the absence of human figurations started developing, aided his new artistic creation. His abstractions were expressive in terms of colours and texturing. All of these features stand true in this painting.
A sense of autumn landscape floods the mind when one observes this painting. The surreal yet scenic flood of colours paints a season that is rarely ever witnessed by the city folk. This is the result of Ram Kumar reminiscing about his time in Shimla. The hillscapes with yellows, greens, and reds add to the classic autumn feel. Designing such an experience made Ram Kumar one of the pioneers of Indian Abstraction.
