Ram Kumar (1924–2018) was one of India’s foremost modern painters and a pioneering abstract artist of the post‑independence era. Born in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, Kumar initially studied economics and later trained in painting in New Delhi and Paris, where he absorbed influences from European modernism. He became a key member of the legendary Progressive Artists’ Group, alongside M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, and F.N. Souza, helping shape the trajectory of modern Indian art.

Kumar began his career with figurative works depicting urban life and the human condition, but by the 1960s he gradually moved toward abstraction. His paintings distilled cityscapes and landscapes into atmospheric, layered planes of colour and texture, often evoking the sombre moods of Benares and Varanasi. Known for his restrained palette, subtle tonal shifts, and contemplative compositions, Ram Kumar is frequently cited as one of the first Indian artists to fully embrace non‑figurative.
