Rabin Mondal Indian, 1929-2019
"I would paint my family members when I was bedridden. They were the original models whom I painted for almost four years"-Rabin Mondal
Rabin Mondal (b. 1929) was a prominent Indian modernist painter and a key figure in the post-independence art movement.
His work powerfully reflects the social and psychological aftermath of the Bengal famine of 1943 and the communal riots of 1946. Through bold brushwork and distorted human forms, Mondal expressed themes of anguish, alienation, and the complexities of the human condition.
He held his first solo exhibition in 1961 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, and went on to participate in numerous national and international exhibitions. In 1964, he co-founded the Calcutta Painters group, and later served as a General Council member of the Lalit Kala Akademi from 1979 to 1983, contributing significantly to India’s contemporary art landscape.
