                                                                                                         - Jogen Chowdhury

Jogen Chowdhury (b. 1939) is a leading figure in modern Indian art and one of Bengal’s most distinctive contemporary painters. Based in Kolkata, he completed his training at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, and over six decades has developed a powerful, emotionally charged style rooted in line, contour, and texture.

Chowdhury’s work often centres on the human figure, rendered in ink, pastel, or watercolour with deep, black‑lined contours that evoke both physical and psychological strain. His imagery blends traditional Bengali visual idioms with a modernist sensibility, frequently addressing themes of memory, rural life, and social unease. A recipient of the Kalidas Sanman and other major honours, Jogen Chowdhury is widely exhibited in India and internationally, and his work appears in important national and private

Galleries and collectors seeking a painter who bridges Indian narrative traditions with contemporary, expressive figuration will find Chowdhury’s oeuvre especially compelling.
