The ‘Saptmatrikas’ is a concept with undefined origin and it surfaces in the art of Seema Kohli as her invocation of those basic energies that are responsible for creation and destruction and creation yet again. The Sapt Matrikas or seven mothers are Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Maheshvari, Indrani, Kaumari, Varahi and Chamunda or Narasimhi. For most of her life as an artist Seema have been painting the subject of creation which is viewed and reviewed by her time and again in the light of various ‘mythic’ concepts.‘ That we know as the goddess is but one aspect of the universal mother we turn to for benevolence, in gratitude, or need. Goddess hood, or motherhood, is perhaps the oldest tribe in the world’, she wrote. In ancient literature one would find mention of detailed iconographic dictates to visualise images of the Saptamatrikas and Asthanayikas, the Navdurgas and the Dasmahavidyas. What is of interest to notice in her art is how cleverly, and albeit artistically, she attempts to analyze the world around her immediate surroundings using inspirations, and associated imagery, from such mythical manifestations.
