The monumentality of the canvas along with a clever space division establishes Gujral as a polymath, a maverick muralist, and an architect. The motifs are stern, unyielding and massive, and at the same time rhythmic and layered. Like a musical composition, Gujral has played with various ranges of colors, from something as assertive as black and red to something as subtle as violet and blue. The human drama, strange emotion, be it of agony or joy or contemplation or engaged with some concentrated activity, has surfaced in his paintings and drawings over the years.
One striking and visually arresting element takes center stage: a
mustachioed man, his flowing hair seamlessly transforming into the feathery
body of a parrot. This captivating portrait is thoughtfully framed by a
trumpet, ingeniously embedded within a checkered sphere. The composition
distinctly bears the influence of Mexican surrealism, with a playful twist—a
parrot emerges from spirals of hair curls, adding a whimsical and enchanting
touch to the piece.
