Painting of Satish Gujral

Overview

“That who is stationary cannot be creative."

                                                                                                                       - Satish Gujral

Satish Gujral (1925–2020) was a celebrated Indian painter, sculptor, printmaker, and muralist whose bold, expressive work became iconic in modern Indian art. Born in Hissar, Punjab (now Haryana), he studied at the Mayo School of Arts in Lahore and later at the École des Beaux‑Arts in Paris. Gujral’s career spanned over seven decades, during which he produced large‑scale murals, sculptures, and canvases that combined Indian subject matter with a distinctly modernist visual language.

His work is known for its massive, simplified figures, dramatic contrasts, and thick textures, often depicting historical events, myth, and the human condition. Gujral’s murals include significant public commissions in India, and his sculptures stand in public spaces and institutions. He received numerous honours, including the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards.

For galleries and collectors, Satish Gujral represents a monumental figure in Indian modernism, whose work bridges national identity, historical memory, and abstracted form on a grand scale.
