S H Raza India, 1922-2016

Overview

“India is always in my heart and I put that in my paintings and sometimes in my dairies and letters.”
                                                                                                                          - S H Raza

Sayed Haider Raza's canvases, with their nuanced use of colours, were infused with Western avant-garde and Indian spirituality, on which he deployed rich combinations and geometric abstraction. Post-World War, he and his contemporaries were at a juncture where they got exposed to both European realism styles and indigenous Ajanta-Ellora murals and Rajput- Mughal miniatures; He acknowledged that he studied all these diligently and unbiasedly.
Later in his life, Raza's inspiration shifted to Indian metaphysics, and Bindu became his trademark.
His art practice recieved a lot of recognition, nationally and internationally. He recieved many prestigious awards for his creations.
