Shampa Sircar Das Indian, b. 1970

Overview

Shampa Sircar Das (b. 1970) is a contemporary Indian artist whose practice engages deeply with ideas of space, consciousness, and transformation. She completed her B.F.A. in Painting from the College of Art, New Delhi in 1993, followed by an M.F.A. in Painting from Jamia Millia Islamia in 1995. Over the years, she has developed a distinctive visual language that draws from Indian philosophical thought, where the canvas becomes a site for reflection, energy, and continual becoming. Her works unfold through a rich symbolic vocabulary, constructing visual environments in which forms appear, expand, and dissolve in a state of flux. Rather than presenting fixed imagery, her compositions suggest a constant movement an exploration of the transient nature of experience and its connection to a larger cosmic rhythm. Fragmented elements, layered through an intuitive and process-oriented approach, gradually come together to form cohesive structures, echoing the way individual moments and perceptions shape a unified understanding of life. Shampa’s sensitivity to material and surface plays a crucial role in her practice. Through the use of acrylic, she builds compositions that balance spontaneity with control, where fields of color, texture, and intricate detailing coexist. Her palette often moves between luminous expanses and denser passages, creating a quiet yet charged atmosphere that encourages sustained engagement. Symbols within her work, subtle yet resonant, function as carriers of memory, thought, and spiritual inquiry, allowing multiple readings to emerge over time. Shampa Sircar Das has exhibited extensively across India and internationally. Her works have been shown at prominent galleries and art spaces in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, and have been part of curated exhibitions focusing on contemporary abstraction and spiritual narratives in Indian art. She has also participated in international exhibitions and residencies, further expanding the scope of her engagement. Her works form part of several private and institutional collections in India and abroad.
