Yusuf Arakkal Paintings

Overview
“I have always tried to add an extra dimension to my canvases by giving my subjects or central characters a freedom to thrive, they cant be prisoned or in confinement. Some people say my techniques are about new trends – I disagree, I haven’t created any new trends; if we look carefully at Indian tradition our miniature painters of yore had done so in their time.”

Yusuf Arakkal (b. 1945, Kerala – d. 2016) was a prominent Indian contemporary artist known for his powerful and thought-provoking exploration of human existence and existential themes. After losing his parents at a young age, he moved to Bangalore, where he pursued his passion for art and established himself as a significant figure in modern Indian painting.

Arakkal’s artistic practice engaged deeply with the human condition, often reflecting themes of isolation, struggle, and introspection. His work spans a wide range of media, including paintings, murals, sculptures, prints, drawings, and literary writings, making him a versatile and multidisciplinary Indian artist.

He primarily worked with acrylic and oil mediums, creating emotionally intense compositions that reflect his philosophical concerns and strong visual language.

Yusuf Arakkal exhibited extensively, with more than 40 solo and group shows in India and international exhibitions in London, France, New York, Hong Kong, and Singapore. His work gained global recognition for its emotional depth and conceptual strength.

He received several prestigious honours, including the Lalit Kala Akademi Award (1979, 1981), the Shiromani Kala Puraskar (1983), and an award at the Third Asian Art Biennale, Dhaka (1986). He was also honoured with the Lorenzo de’ Medici Gold Medal at the Florence International Biennale, marking his international acclaim in contemporary art.
