Paresh Maity Indian, b. 1965
This Banaras moonscape is an imaginary depiction of the holy city rather than a realistic one—a tableau of its ghats, temples, buildings and riverfront as imagined by the artist through recalled memory—that glows incandescently at night. The silence of this night scene might be broken by a snatch of a boatman’s song or a musician’s melodious beat, but Paresh Maity has captured its eloquent silence in a painting of magnificent proportions.
