Nothing symbolises Banaras in popular perception more
than its tumbledown steps racing headlong towards the river over which hundreds
of thousands of feet traipse regularly to perform ablutions and rituals by the
riverside. Pilgrims and priests assemble under the thatched umbrellas by day.
At night, their silhouettes create a perception of a stage, waiting to welcome
them back as dawn breaks over a landscape made familiar over millennia.
