Thota Vaikuntam frequently uses Telangana women as subjects for his artwork. The preoccupation can be linked to his early fascination with the male actors who would portray female characters in the travelling theatre-troupe performances held in his village. He acknowledges that he merely tries to depict the vibrancy of these woman. Before tackling his colourful, big canvases, Thota Vaikuntam's studies were supported by these pictures of local women from his area. Vaikuntam is exceptional in how he depicts the bottu and the turmeric-sandal-stained foreheads of Telangana women.
