The Biggest Indian Art Show Is Back!

Cover Story, May 15, 2014

After the success of the first edition of Kala Sutra last year, the biggest Indian art show in Singapore returned for the second time from May 22–25, 2014 at The Arts House, Singapore. Presented by Sanchit Art in partnership with PHI Events, the exhibition brought together some of the most renowned and recognised Indian artists whose works capture the country’s post-independence stories.

The exhibition featured works by Ram Kumar, Sakti Burman, Satish Gujral, Thota Vaikuntam, Paresh Maity, Jogen Chowdhury, Arpana Caur, Jayasri Burman and Neeraj Goswami. These post-independence artists speak of the Indian story, woven beautifully with their cultural understanding, personal psyche and documentation of the times they have lived in.

While the underlying theme of most of the artworks was India through the years, the treatment of the subject varied from artist to artist. Through diverse artistic expressions, the exhibition reflected the ethos of fast-paced change experienced by the common Indian mind, while also exploring themes of spirituality, memory, mythology, and human emotion.

Kala Sutra 2014 also offered audiences an opportunity to interact face-to-face with several celebrated artists, creating a meaningful cultural exchange between India and Singapore.
