Shanti Dave (b. 1931) is an influential Indian modernist and one of the country’s earliest practitioners of calligraphic abstraction. Born in Gujarat and later based in Delhi, he trained at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, before evolving into a distinctive abstract language centred on the written word and

Dave’s work spans painting, encaustic, and mixed media, often combining wax, oil, and calligraphy to create layered, textured surfaces. In his mature period, the “akshara” (letter) becomes a recurring motif, transformed into abstract shapes and rhythmic patterns that hover between legibility and pure form. Frequently described as India’s original calligraphic abstractionist, Shanti Dave occupies a unique position in post‑independence Indian art
