Behind The Canvas - Satish Gujral

As a painter, sculptor, muralist, architect, and writer, Satish Gujral stands as a towering figure in Indian art — a rare visionary whose influence spanned the entire post-Independence period. Widely regarded as a modern icon, his work remained consistently relevant across decades.

Between 1944 and 1947, Gujral engaged with members of the Progressive Artists’ Group in Bombay — a collective that included luminaries such as S.H. Raza, F.N. Souza, P.N. Mago, Jehangir Sabavala, and M.F. Husain. While he shared the group's desire to break from colonial academic conventions, Gujral did not align with their wholesale embrace of European Expressionist and Cubist idioms. Instead, he pursued a path that sought a modern visual language deeply informed by Indian ethos and cultural memory.
