Overview
“I don't really know who I am, my paintings are like me. Bullah, I don't know who I am”
                                                                                                                       - Manjit Bawa

Manjit Bawa was a modernist master who anchored himself with figurative painting from the genesis of his journey. He stuck to his figurations even when abstraction dominated the artistic milieu.
References to Indian mythology are very evident in his works. Their Weightless, free-floating form and often showing icons and myths contribute to his artistic identity. His explorations were connected to the "separate mental universe" that humans and animals inhabit while coexisting together. Red, Pink, and violet were central colours on his pallet, which showcases the rich traditional Indian colours. A stark background against the free-floating forms confirms his training as a serigraphy artist and printmaker. Manjit draws inspiration from Indian mythology, Sufism, and India's eternal literature, music, and poetry.
