"Art inspires me to live. I live for art and cannot live without it."
- Shipra Bhattacharya
Shipra Bhattacharya (b. 1954) is a contemporary Indian artist born in Kolkata, known for her distinctive exploration of women’s experiences and feminist themes in contemporary art. She is a graduate of the College of Arts and Crafts and the College of Visual Arts, Kolkata, where she developed her strong visual language rooted in figuration and narrative expression.
Her paintings are recognised for their layered compositions, featuring textured foregrounds filled with patterns, natural motifs, and symbolic elements, contrasted with serene backgrounds depicting female figurations. This interplay creates a visual dialogue between complexity and calm, intimacy and distance.
Bhattacharya’s use of soft yet primary colours enhances the emotional and symbolic depth of her work. Through her practice, she explores identity, femininity, and the lived experiences of women in contemporary society.
She has participated in numerous national and international group exhibitions and has received critical acclaim for her contribution to contemporary Indian art.
