Manjit Bawa Artworks

Overview
“I don't really know who I am, my paintings are like me. Bullah, I don't know who I am”
                                                                                                                       - Manjit Bawa

Manjit Bawa (1942–2008) was a modernist master who anchored his practice in figurative painting from the very beginning of his journey, remaining committed to figuration even when abstraction dominated the Indian art scene. His works are deeply rooted in Indian mythology, with weightless, free‑floating forms that often depict icons, gods, and mythic narratives, forming the core of his artistic identity.

Bawa’s explorations revolve around the “separate mental universe” that humans and animals inhabit while coexisting, reflecting themes of spirituality, compassion, and interconnected life. Red, pink, and violet are central colours on his palette, showcasing rich traditional Indian hues that evoke devotion and sensuality. A stark, minimal background against his free‑floating forms highlights his training as a serigraphy artist and printmaker, giving his paintings a clean, graphic quality.

Manjit Bawa drew inspiration from Indian mythology, Sufism, and India’s eternal literature, music, and poetry. His distinctive style, spiritual depth, and vibrant colour have made him a celebrated name in modern Indian art, with works exhibited widely and held in important private and public collections.
