Jaya Ganguly Indian, b. 1958
“In my early painting, the Mother Kali would appear sometimes as a person or the most ordinary women would resemble HER- and even parody HER divine gestures”-Jaya Ganguly
Jaya Ganguly (b. 1958, Kolkata) is a renowned contemporary Indian artist known for her expressive figurative paintings and distinctive textural style. Her works are characterised by primitive-inspired figurations that convey strong emotion, individuality, and symbolic depth.
A graduate of the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Kolkata (1982), Ganguly developed a unique visual language defined by dynamic surface textures and a warm colour palette dominated by rich reds and oranges. Her technique adds movement and intensity to her compositions, giving her figures a powerful and memorable presence.
Her paintings often explore themes of human emotion, identity, and inner experience through stylised forms and layered surfaces. Combining contemporary expression with primal visual energy, her work occupies a significant place in contemporary Indian figurative art.
Jaya Ganguly has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions and has received recognition from prestigious institutions, including the Birla Academy of Art and Culture Award, Kolkata (1997), the Bhopal Biennale (1996), and the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Kolkata (1980).
