Dipak Banerjee Indian, 1936-2020

Overview
“I am not a practicing tantric but I gradually moved to the tantric mode of self-realisation during my many explorations. In my collection of temple motifs, I was unconsciously gaining an album of tantric symbolic motifs like Purusha Prakriti, Vishnu, Sahasra, Nathji and Kundalini, which presented the spiritual dynamics of content in ancient Indian art. So you could say that the journey which began in Paris got its final direction through the lanes of Benaras.”
                                                                                                              - Dipak Banerjee

In his initial years, Dipak Banerjee's themes and forms of his practice conformed to Western norms. Later, on introspection, India's rich culture and heritage became central to his exploration. His art sets him apart from other practitioners of 'Neo-Tantra'. This difference is visible in his ability to transcend the style. Yantra designs, motifs like lotus, 'Om', and images of Hindu deities were the recurring motif in his works. His artworks consist of transparent layers of colours, smooth lines, and an earthy palette. He had prolific control over watercolours.
Though Hinduism and spirituality advance his works, his art exudes more liberal and universal perspectives. He could be deemed the leader of India's Neo-Tantric art movement.
Dipak Banerjee has exhibited solo nationally in Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai and internationally in Europe, South America, and Hongkong.
