Lalu Prasad Shaw Artist
"I am not an artist but a painter. I like to paint directly; so initially I look for the structure of a painting, then put up colors and in the last stage, I give the finishing touch."
- Lalu Prasad Shaw
Lalu Prasad Shaw (b. 1950, Bengal) is a leading contemporary Bengali painter known for his expressive, emotionally charged works that blend figuration with subtle abstraction. Based in Kolkata, he studied at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, and has developed a distinctive style centred on the human figure, often rendered in oil with rich textures and a sensitive, introspective approach.
Shaw’s paintings frequently explore themes of memory, childhood, rural Bengal, and the inner lives of ordinary people. His brushwork is fluid yet controlled, and his compositions often feel narrative without being literal, inviting viewers to read between the lines of everyday existence. A recipient of several national and regional honours, he has exhibited widely in India and abroad, and his work is held in important private and institutional collections.
For galleries and collectors seeking a contemporary Bengali painter who captures the emotional depth of everyday life with a modern visual language, Lalu Prasad Shaw is a key name in post‑colonial Indian art.
