Dipak Banerjee Indian, 1936-2020

Overview
“I am not a practicing tantric but I gradually moved to the tantric mode of self-realisation during my many explorations. In my collection of temple motifs, I was unconsciously gaining an album of tantric symbolic motifs like Purusha Prakriti, Vishnu, Sahasra, Nathji and Kundalini, which presented the spiritual dynamics of content in ancient Indian art. So you could say that the journey which began in Paris got its final direction through the lanes of Benaras.”
                                                                                                              - Dipak Banerjee

Dipak Banerjee (b. 1936-2020, Barishal, Bangladesh) is an Indian modern painter and printmaker closely associated with the Neo‑Tantra movement in Indian art. After migrating to Kolkata, he graduated from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, and later studied in Paris at École des Beaux‑Arts and Atelier 17 under S.W. Hayter, as well as in Oslo under a Norwegian fellowship, which honed his mastery of printmaking and layered colour.

Banerjee’s work is known for its spiritual, symbol‑rich compositions, often built around yantras, lotus motifs, geometric forms, and deities. His transparent layers, smooth lines, and earthy palette give his paintings a meditative intensity, aligning them with the introspective side of modern Indian art. A recipient of the National Award twice, as well as AIFACS and U.P. State Lalit Kala Academy honours, he has taught at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Banaras Hindu University, and remains an active voice in the Society of Contemporary Artists.

For galleries and collectors, Dipak Banerjee represents a key figure in India’s Neo‑Tantra and modernist printmaking traditions, blending Tantric symbolism with contemporary abstraction.
