Overview

"They can put me in the jungle. Still, I can create”

- M. F. Husain

Maqbool Fida Husain has a canonical contribution to Indian modernity, and his prominence echoes uninterrupted even in the 21st century. Husain gained acclaim internationally for his prolific ways of using free-hand drawings and vibrant colour to depict Indian subject matter and amalgamating them with contemporary European movements like expressionism and cubism.
Religious and symbolic iconography with historical figures and traces of events from his life are the recurring motifs in his compositions.
His paintings displayed contemporaneity with references to Indian mythology. Celebrated figures and cinema made a fairly frequent appearance. He dabbled in figurative works mostly.
